Climate overview

Berlin lies on the North European Plain, far enough from the sea that its climate is noticeably more continental than London's or Amsterdam's. It is usually classed as temperate oceanic (Cfb), but with colder winters and warmer summers, and it sits close to the boundary with a humid continental climate (Dfb).

Average highs range from 3°C in January to 24°C in July and August. Annual precipitation is fairly low, at about 570 mm, and summer is the wettest season because of convective thunderstorms. Winters are grey and cold, with frequent frosts, while summers are pleasantly warm and long.

Köppen classification: Cfb — temperate oceanic (with continental influence)

Berlin through the seasons

Winter

December – February

Winter is cold, cloudy and quiet, with highs of 3–5°C and lows around -1 to -2°C. Snow falls in most winters, though cover tends to be patchy. Easterly winds from Russia can bring sharp cold spells with temperatures well below -10°C. Short days and long overcast periods are typical.

Spring

March – May

Spring warms steadily from 9°C in March to 19°C in May. It is often fairly dry and increasingly sunny. Late frosts are possible into April, but by May the city's parks, beer gardens and canalside cafés fill up.

Summer

June – August

Summer is warm, with highs of 22–24°C and long daylight hours. Thunderstorms are the main source of rain, and June is the wettest month at around 68 mm. Hot spells above 30°C occur most years, and lakes around the city are popular for swimming.

Autumn

September – November

September stays mild at around 19°C, often with settled weather. October cools to 14°C, with colourful parks, and by November the city turns grey and damp at around 7°C.

What makes Berlin's weather distinctive

Berlin's continental influence means wider temperature swings than in western European capitals. A winter high pressure system from the east can bring clear, frosty days well below zero, while summer can feel genuinely hot. Humidity is moderate, and fog is common in late autumn.

Precipitation is low for a European capital, and the region around Berlin is relatively dry, with sandy soils. Summer droughts have become more frequent, while intense thunderstorms can cause brief localised flooding.

Best time to visit Berlin

May to September is the best time to visit Berlin, when highs of 19–24°C suit outdoor life — parks, lakes, open-air cinemas and long evenings. Late spring and September are especially pleasant. Winter is cold and grey but has its charm, particularly around the Christmas markets in December.

What to pack

  • Layers for changeable spring and autumn weather
  • A light rain jacket for summer thunderstorms
  • A warm, windproof winter coat, hat, gloves and scarf
  • Waterproof boots for slush and wet pavements in winter
  • Comfortable shoes — distances between neighbourhoods are large
