Climate overview
Jakarta sits on the low northwest coast of Java, on a flat plain crossed by 13 rivers flowing down from the volcanic highlands to the Java Sea. Its climate is tropical monsoon (Am): hot and humid throughout the year, with a long wet season and a shorter dry season. Average highs vary only from 29°C to 31°C, and lows hold at 23–24°C.
Annual rainfall is about 1,800 mm. From November to April, the northwest monsoon brings the wet season, with January and February the wettest months at about 300 mm each. From June to September, the southeast monsoon brings drier air from Australia, and August is the driest month at about 43 mm. Humidity is high all year, ranging from about 74% to 87%.
Köppen classification: Am — tropical monsoon
Jakarta through the seasons

Dry season
June – SeptemberThe sunniest and driest months. Highs average 31°C. Short showers can still occur, but long rainy spells are rare. Air quality can deteriorate in this season due to traffic, industry and lack of rain to clear pollution.

What makes Jakarta's weather distinctive
Flooding is Jakarta's biggest weather challenge. Heavy rain, overflowing rivers, high tides and land subsidence — some districts are sinking several centimetres a year due to groundwater extraction — combine to flood parts of the city most wet seasons. The major floods of early 2020 affected large areas. Indonesia's decision to build a new capital, Nusantara, in Borneo is partly linked to these pressures.
Air quality is the other frequent concern, particularly in the dry season, when Jakarta can rank among the most polluted major cities in the world on some days. Checking AQI before outdoor activity is worthwhile.
Best time to visit Jakarta
June to September is the best time to visit Jakarta, during the dry season, with less rain and lower flood risk. July and August are usually the driest and sunniest. The wet season is still manageable for city travel, but allow extra time for traffic.
What to pack
- Lightweight, breathable clothing
- An umbrella or rain jacket in the wet season
- Waterproof sandals or shoes
- Modest clothing for mosques and conservative areas
- Sunscreen, insect repellent and a mask for poor air-quality days
