Climate overview
Mumbai sits on a peninsula on India's west coast, facing the Arabian Sea, and its climate is tropical monsoon (Am). Temperatures are warm all year, ranging from about 29°C to 33°C by day, but the city's weather is defined by one dramatic event: the southwest monsoon, which delivers most of its rain between June and September.
Mumbai receives about 2,170 mm of rain a year, and roughly 80% of it falls in those four monsoon months. July alone averages over 600 mm. The rest of the year is mostly dry, with clear, warm winters and a hot, humid build-up in April and May.
Köppen classification: Am — tropical monsoon
Mumbai through the seasons
Winter
December – FebruaryThis is Mumbai's most pleasant season. Highs stay at 31–32°C, but lows fall to about 16–17°C, humidity drops, and skies are clear. Evenings along Marine Drive are especially comfortable.
Pre-monsoon
March – MayHeat and humidity build steadily. Highs average 33°C and humidity rises to nearly 80% by May, making it feel much hotter. Occasional pre-monsoon showers may arrive in late May.
Monsoon
June – SeptemberThe southwest monsoon usually arrives in early June and brings frequent, often torrential rain. July is the wettest month at about 617 mm. Waterlogging and local flooding can disrupt trains and roads, but the rain also cools the city slightly.
Post-monsoon
October – NovemberRain fades in October, and a brief, hot and humid period called 'October heat' follows, with highs around 33°C. By November the air becomes drier, and the winter season begins.
What makes Mumbai's weather distinctive
The arrival of the monsoon is a major event in Mumbai, usually expected around the first half of June. Heavy rain can cause serious flooding in low-lying areas and suspend suburban train services; on the heaviest days, authorities may advise people to stay home.
The sea also matters: high tides combined with heavy rain can make flooding worse, and the coastline sees rough seas during the monsoon. In the dry season, air quality can deteriorate, especially in winter.
Best time to visit Mumbai
November to February is the best time to visit Mumbai, with warm days, cooler evenings and almost no rain. The monsoon months offer a dramatic, green and atmospheric city, but heavy rain can disrupt travel. April and May are hot and humid.
What to pack
