Climate overview
Buenos Aires sits on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, one of the widest estuaries in the world, with the flat Pampas grasslands stretching inland. It has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa): hot, humid summers, mild and damp winters, and rain in every month. As a Southern Hemisphere city, its summer runs from December to February.
Average highs range from 30°C in January to 15°C in June and July. Annual rainfall is about 1,200 mm, fairly evenly spread, with March and October among the wettest months. Humidity is high all year — usually 68–77% — which makes summer feel steamy and winter feel colder than the temperature suggests.

What makes Buenos Aires's weather distinctive
Two winds shape Buenos Aires weather. The sudestada is a strong southeasterly wind that can last several days, bringing cold rain and pushing water from the Río de la Plata into low-lying riverside neighbourhoods. The pampero is a cold, dry southwesterly that often arrives after a storm, clearing the sky and dropping temperatures sharply.
Summer storms are often intense, with heavy rain in a short time; some neighbourhoods are prone to flooding. In summer, the combination of heat and humidity can make the city feel oppressive, especially away from the river.
Best time to visit Buenos Aires
September to November and March to May are the best times to visit Buenos Aires, when temperatures of 18–26°C suit walking between neighbourhoods, café terraces and parks. Summer is hot and quieter in the city, while winter is mild and good for museums and tango shows.
